Hel is a goddess in Norse mythology associated with death and the realm of the dead, also known as Helheim. She is often depicted with a dark and ominous appearance, but she is also considered a benevolent and compassionate goddess who cares for the souls of the dead.

In Norse mythology, Hel is the daughter of Loki and Angrboda. She is described as having a terrifying appearance, with one half of her face being that of a beautiful young girl and the other half being that of a dead woman. She rules over Helheim, the realm of the dead, where the souls of the deceased are sent after their death. Souls that are not worthy to join the gods in Asgard or warriors who did not die in battle and go to Valhalla are sent to Helheim to be judged.

Although Hel is associated with death, she is also considered a compassionate and benevolent goddess who cares for the souls of the dead. In some stories, she has been described as offering gifts and guidance to the dead who arrive in Helheim. She is often depicted with a melancholic and caring face.

The name Hel is also used to refer to the realm of the dead itself, which is described as a dark and cold place but also as a place where the dead can find peace and rest. In Norse beliefs, it was important to behave well in life to have a chance of going to a better place after death.
